What is Omphalophobia?
Omphalophobia is the phobia of Belly Buttons and is a relatively uncommon phobia.
It is often related to the sometimes strange shape or appearance of some belly buttons, and humans all have unique belly buttons!
Omphalophobia may also be related to Dysmorphophobia, the fear of deformity.
Omphalophobia Symptoms & Behaviours
All phobias and fears, including Omphalophobia, create feelings of anxiety because phobic objects or situations are almost always perceived as a threat.
Because the idea of a threat is individual and highly subjective, the symptoms of your Omphalophobia can be both specific as well as common across the population and may include:
- Anxiety about being near to belly buttons.
- Panic attacks or anxiety attacks in situations where belly buttons are present or anticipated to be present.
- Safety behaviours or avoidance of situations that may involve belly buttons.
- Physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath when faced with belly buttons.
- Feeling of helplessness or being out of control in the presence of belly buttons.
- Obsessive thoughts (OCD) or nightmares related to belly buttons.
- Depression, irritability, or other mood changes related to belly buttons.
You may have all, some or even different symptoms to these listed here and this is due to the subjective nature of Omphalophobia and your own personal experiences during your life.
